I believe that is the only way to follow someone on another server.
I have noticed that some people have multiple addresses, figuring out the correct/active may be the next trick, if needed.

In our decentralized future, every group of friends or special interest community is going to have its own instance.

Wow, we moved to SF around the same time, I moved here in '88 and remember accessing the internet via CompuServe (worked in legal) pre-Windows.
SF SOMA raves were definitely a trip back then and a much needed release right in the middle of the AIDS epidemic.
I hear them gripe that “they don’t like politics over there”.
Or that we are sooooo thin-skinned that we have to have content warnings on a lot of stuff.
Or it’s too complicated. Or it will never work. Or it’s just the next social media flavor of the minute.
As someone who only washed up on the shores here recently, I beg to differ.
Personally, I have been elated since setting up camp here in #Mastonia. (Do you like that? I just made it up🤓)

Here are a few unsolicited thoughts from a long-time. #Mastodon user. (I think today is day nine?)
Over on the bird app some folks are making fun of us newborn pachyderms.
Apparently we’re all bragging about this place being nothing but sunshine and lollipops and peaceful loving people burning sage and hugging each other and singing Kumbaya round the clock.
You know. #Mastonia.
The #Fediverse.
Where even the technicolor unicorns have rose-flavored farts.
