Stealing Benefacio's Roses by Martin Prechtel.

"An enchanting little memoir by a horse-owner turned anthropologist."

Not actually an entirely accurate description, it is easier to believe than a more illuminating description.

I mean, who'd credit, "An anti-nihilistic blended-and-cross-cultural Hunter-S.-Thompson-escapes-right-wing-Latin-American-death-squads, with an escapade into the underworld"?
Nobody right?
So it's a little memoir.

"Gentlemen I want to introduce you to a man who is my friend and his name is #MartinPrechtel. I want to let you know he is the spookiest man in North America. He looks like one of you. But he's one of them."

I wonder if #MartinPrechtel's writings are an accessible view of one till-recently fairly non-Modern culture?

It is not I think that the Greeks of Socrates' day were a lot like the highland #Mayan Tzutujil. Rather that those Greeks may have been as foreign to us as the Tzutujil.

Our current approach to the dead draws heavily from both #EarlyEuropeanChristianity and #Socrates. And AIUI was a reason that hemlock was ordered. See #SimonCritchley #TragedyTheGreeksAndUs https://youtu.be/_48xuThZty8

Grieving was huge in old EU. Heard of ancestor worship too?
