It's good to get to the local river once a week with Maron.

After two night and a day or so of heavy rain the river is the highest we've ever experienced. Maron caught herself as she tried to go in the way she usually does. She's |as smart as| (smarter than) she looks, I guess. She wanted to go after the blue heron and the other big white bird (heron? ShiroSagi) but stopped herself as she felt the strength of the current. It's a shame I didn't have time or energy to go yesterday when the river was more brown and swollen. Maron at the beach and in the ocean for her first time. She seemed to like it. The little waves didn't bother her. Over the last month or so she started going into the river and that may have got her ready for the ocean. She was good, no trouble at all...

Cute crab at the beach.
Maron, the Shiba dog, thought the crab was cute too. Maron tried to eat the crab, but the whole situation seemed playful and affectionate. The crab probably didn't enjoy the time as much as Maron seemed to but eventually they went on their separate ways unharmed.

Maron "Let's go! Anywhere, somewhere, let's take a walk, go chew grass or find old potatoes or something... I gotta get out of here for a while..."
She's an Animals fan, maybe... "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" but not that far... It's usually nice here.. But we need to get out of the yard for a while at least once a day...

It was a nice Saturday and I was able to take Maron out for a more leisurely work than usual. On the way back I saw two little dogs out in the street and thought they must have escaped from somewhere. Maron was excited to find new playmate, or so she though. She gets alert, sits and wags her tail and almost looks like she stalking when she finds another dog to play with. She doesn't understand aggression. She's like the Zora Neale Hurston of dogs, how could anyone possible want to avoid, or be averse to, the pleasure of her company? I figured the anxious little lap dogs would probably yap away and be noisy but that it would help their owner find them. The little dog was aggressive, charging and trying to bit Maron. Maron was puzzled and ran behind me. It's good that she's too sweet to eat that little dog. I couldn't help bursting out laughing and that surprised the lapdogs enough to give Maron a break and they started yapping and a teenage girl came out of a nearby house and started yelling and her Dad ran out and tried to chase the dogs back into the yard. They didn't seem to have the leeway for a conversation or even for smiling very much so we left them in peace.

I should have got pictures of our evening encounter with Mana, the big white Akita pup. She's a lot of fun and at more than 4x Maron's weight she can put up with Maron's enthusiasm..

Maron the Shiba Dog searching for moles in a nearby sweet potato field. They just tilled it so we won't be walking through this field for a while. It's nice when your tired to go someplace like this. All you have to do is stand there and she jumps and digs and keeps herself entertained. I imagine this sort or exercise is just as good as running after a ball or walking for the same 15 minutes...

Sometimes Chiharu is walked by the house and we can get Maron out with her to be social. Chiharu is one of the only (2) dogs that can but up with Maron's overly enthusiastic affection and play. The other dog is a big, white Akita pup. The Akita dogs use their front legs the same as the Shiba, it's fascinating to watch... Sometimes the seem to hug each other.

After Maron eats she's anxious to go for a walk, or at least out to the garden or neighboring field to reliever herself a bit, eats some grass, hop around hoping to catch moles or something.. But I usually have to walk around and feed the chickens first so I attach her walking (~ 5meters) lead to a bush by the firewood so she can smell places she can usually only see or hear. This time she got her lead wrapped around a YatsuDe. The shrub is called a an 8-hand but a forest guy said the leave always have either 7 or 9 fingers, never eight. Maybe the name just took the average?

Marron is surprisingly calm when she gets her lead stuck. She gives off a few alarm barks then just waits. She causes a lot less stress than the noisy Maltese dog we ended up with for a few years. That dog could not learn to shut up: it was impossible to have a conversation with a visitor... Wikipedia or somewhere said that Maltese dogs are the most abandoned in both Seoul and Australia...
