En este libro #MariaGainza parte de historias y encuentros reales, pero les imprime los ritmos y atmósferas de la ficción, esa capacidad de seducir a través de una actitud curiosa, ese don para interiorizar los hechos y agitar el frasco de lo secreto.

"We have little and nothing: only what we are today, at a stretch what we did yesterday, and with luck what we're going to do tomorrow."

"I offered the Russian some nuts in a bowl. I had recently been keeping nuts to hand at all times, in imitation of Rachmaninov, who always had pistachios within easy reach as a way of keeping his fears at bay."

For me it's shelling peanuts that keep my fears at bay. (This is an old photo so not sure what I was doing/planning to do with the fork.)

Austrian-Argentine painter, Mariette Lydis, best known for her delicate and moody portraits, "was a regular feature in [Buenos Aires's] most refined circles...But in time she began to withdraw, losing her taste for company. It was then that forgeries of her work began to circulate...nobody gave much thought to provenance. It was a style of painting that people never thought to be suspicious about."

"Can a forgery not give as much pleasure as an original?"

Well, if it's an authentic experience, then I don't see why not.

And on a related note, if a translation is a kind of forgery, then I have to say, hell yeah. Thomas Bunstead's translation of this novel is giving me great pleasure.

"'A conversation about a painting is the quickest way to get to know a person.'...'Art is the greatest way to find out what people are truly like. It is the cheapest lie detector I know of.'"

Ditto for a conversation about a book or a film.
