The last time the United States of America instituted a draft was 1972. There's a great documentary called "Sir! No, Sir" about the vibrant and extensive military protest movement. A big part of the anti-war movement as a whole was that drafted individuals, and by extension their entire families, were at risk of having their lives ruined by war. And people got fed up with unpopular wars.
Contrast that with our current system of voluntary service, where people get benefits and pensions that can be threatened if they don't fall in line. Disobey an order? You have to decide if it's worth your career, college tuition, or medical care. So there's a lot less boat rocking.
This idea that mandatory military service will force young men to "man up" is misguided at best. But I guess any bad faith argument is good enough if it feeds the death cult.
