John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan V Selvaganesh and Ganesh Rajagopalan win Best Global Music Album for 'This Moment' | - Times of India
Shakti, the recently reconvened global fusion band, has won the Best Global Music Album for 'This Moment'. This is the group’s first new album in more than 45 years. The new album featured eight new compositions and by John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth) and Zakir Hussain (tabla), vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V. Selvaganesh and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan. They were nominated in the race Grammys with artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy and Davido.'This Moment', which was released on June 30, 2023, was apparently was recorded separately by each member, who sent in their contributions separately from their home cities. Last year, Shakti hosted a 27-city 50th Anniversary Tour, which featured 17 US performances with solo opening slots by Jerry Douglas, Bill Frisell, Béla Fleck, and John Scofield. Speaking about the album, McLaughlin had said in a statement, “This Moment, the new ‘studio’ album is a true labor of love. The music on this recording represents a quantum leap in the musical evolution of Shakti. It represents 50 years of working and playing together beginning in 1973. The numerous concerts we have played, the number of times we have been together working on our musical development, have brought us to the point where it has all been brought together here and now in the 21st Century.”
