MMP is an interesting beast. So far, NZ has used it to form government by including minor parties. But it isn't limited to include minors only. The outcome can be not very constructive. The present being an example of a disjointed affair.
Maybe the two larger parties need to really think hard about getting heads together and work out a way to get some sensible governance that can actually relate to the majority.
Otherwise, the rabbit holes ,vs mountain s, keep being dug and then get filled back in.

The great thing with #MMP is you can vote Greens without fearing splitting the left votes and handing victory to the right. Historically under FPP National became government despite receiving fewer votes than Labour due to number of electorate seats won by Nats.

I love this Podcast. In this episode it tells the story of how New Zealand getting MMP was in no small part due to a mistake... It also charts the rise of some bloke named Winston Peters.

The series (both 1 & 2) should be required listening for all Kiwi, not just imports like me to (re)learn our modern history.

NZ got proportional representation elections, in the end, kind of by accident. With 1980s Labour PM David Lange misreading his notes and committing to it, and when Labour reneged, National leader Jim Bolger promised a referendum on it. Thinking kiwis would never vote for it.

Germans in the north have been stonewalled, but in the center and south are making progress, despite many bridges blown by the Americans in the center.

Cubes are Victory Point locations, red for American control and purple for German control. Germans are up to 13 pts.

Labour haven't been effective in opposition since the early 1980s. NZ could have been a one-party state since then (with 2 official factions; NatLabs and LabNats). Luckily folks keen on keeping multi-party representation won us #MMP.
