"The U.S. is the world’s largest exporter of liquid natural gas (LNG), and oil and gas companies and their trade groups have spent years lobbying to weaken the EU’s methane law in the name of energy security concerns. Now, attacks on gas infrastructure in the Middle East and spiking energy shortages in Europe add urgency to the industry’s push"

As War on Iran Continues, a European Climate Law Could Be at Risk

Industry groups warn of “supply shocks” as energy shortages grow, but critics say targeting the EU’s methane rule would lock in polluting U.S. fossil fuel infrastructure at a dire cost to local and global communities.

Why city street surveys miss methane leaks, and what that means for safety

The complexities of urban environments—like variable winds off tall buildings or surfaces—significantly impair the ability to detect natural gas leaks from underground pipelines, a new study shows. SMU researchers found that detection probability can be reduced by 16 percentage points for methane gas leaks from main pipelines and by as much as 38 percentage points for service line leaks in urban areas, compared to rural settings.

The emissions open a new window into the conflict’s growing #carbon footprint, revealing how greenhouse gases can spike when #fossilfuel infrastructure is targeted. When #LNG can’t be exported or used, operators either burn it off or vent it into the atmosphere, releasing #CO2 or even more potent #methane, at levels detectable by satellites.

State of the Global Climate 2025

WMO’s State of the Global Climate report 2025 confirms that 2015-2025 are the hottest 11-years on record, and that 2025 was the second or third hottest year on record, at about 1.43 °C above the 1850-1900 average. Extreme events around the world, including intense heat, heavy rainfall and tropical cyclones, caused disruption and devastation and highlighted the vulnerability of our inter-connected economies and societies. The ocean continues to warm and absorb carbon dioxide. It has been absorbing the equivalent of about eighteen times the annual human energy use each year for the past two decades. Annual sea ice extent in the Arctic was at or near a record low, Antarctic sea ice extent was the third lowest on record, and glacier melt continued unabated, according to the report. For the first time, the report includes the Earth’s energy imbalance as one of the key climate indicators.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — "A methane gas leak that prompted an evacuation in Wasco is now under control, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

"A methane gas well caught fire in a remote area around 9:30 a.m. in Wasco near Palm Avenue and Phillips Road. An evacuation order was issued for a half mile radius, according to #Genasys.

"Officials say they were able to extinguish the fire, the leak is no longer active and the evacuation order has been lifted.

"Events leading up to the fire and gas leak are not immediately known."

Feds Are Downplaying #MethaneLeaks in America’s Biggest #OilField, Satellite Data Suggests

A report found #MethaneEmissions in the #PermianBasin to be nearly four times higher than #EPA estimates. A senator wants an explanation.

"#FossilFuel extraction is a known source of #methane leaks, releasing large amounts of this potent #GreenhouseGas into the atmosphere. Yet the Environmental Protection Agency appears to be drastically underreporting emissions from the nation’s largest oil-producing region.

"Nearly half of U.S. oil comes from the Permian Basin in West #Texas and southeastern #NewMexico. The region generates more than $100 billion annually for the U.S. economy, and apparently, a whole lot of methane, too. A recent report from #MethaneSAT—a methane-sensing satellite that observed Earth from March 2024 to June 2025—found emissions from the Permian Basin to be nearly four times higher than the EPA’s official estimates."

#Colorado’s #OilAndGas industry is vastly underestimating #methane emissions

Excerpt: "A unique aerial measurement campaign found that emission inventories compiled by energy companies to account for planet-warming methane leaking from equipment on Colorado oil and gas production sites undercount such #pollutants by at least two times.

"Results from the $3.25 million project, led by a team of university researchers and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, provided officials for the first time with a more complete picture of the invisible pollutant emitted from well pads. #FossilFuel extraction is the state’s second-largest source of methane pollution, which has a global warming potential roughly 80 times that of carbon dioxide during a 20-year period."
