A planet that is about the size of Saturn, but with a temperature more like Earth’s, has an atmosphere rich in methane, according to a new study using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Methane fingerprints sharpen global emissions map, pointing to China, India and Central Africa

Atmospheric methane levels have surged to record highs in recent years and are projected to increase by as much as 13% by 2030, according to a report from the Climate & Clean Air Coalition. As scientists work to better understand what is driving this rise, a new collaborative study published in Nature Communications used methane isotopologues to trace where recent emissions originate and how they are changing around the world.

"The melting ice caps are accelerating global warming and contributing to sea level rise, but could also contribute to a different kind of climate catastrophe. The melting may cause massive amounts of frozen #methane to bubble up into the atmosphere. It happened thousands of years ago - and scientists are concerned it’s about to happen again.

Methane is a greenhouse gas which is 86 times more potent than CO2. Some estimates suggest this frozen methane - methane hydrates - contain twice as much warming potential as all the coal, oil and gas on Earth.

Scientists have now discovered a new way for methane in #Greenland to be unleashed. It’s not a threat that has been taken seriously as the evidence has been inconclusive. But perhaps it’s time for us to take notice?

Canada's new national strategy to boost electrification using clean sources does include solar, wind, rebates for heat pumps in homes and retrofitting buildings, integration of home solar into the grid, but also focuses on greater use of natural gas to generate electricity. Meanwhile, communities in British Columbia near fracking sites and LNG facilities continue to push for a better understanding of the health effects.

Methane hydrates form when gas molecules are trapped in a cage of water molecules, freezing into an ice-like substance. They are sometimes called “fire ice” because they can burn despite being 85 per cent water.
They form under the high pressure and low temperature found in sediments beneath the ocean, permafrost or glaciers. Some estimates suggest methane hydrates contain twice as much carbon as all coal, oil and conventional gas on Earth.
