Gig workers get an über-lift

Massachusetts has become the first state to approve collective bargaining for drivers for ride-hailing services, while maintaining flexibility and contractor independence. This might be a model for other workers in the evolving, internet-based economy.

I drive rideshare b/c I like the hours & b/c I can watch my son after his programs.

I maximize my hourly earnings while minimizing costs by cherry picking rides & driving a used EV I own.

Uber makes low offers. Lyft does better. I like being able to see the data.

I want to see other drivers cherry pick, even manually, to help push offers up since to app are making $$$.

(I'm a beta tester for this app).

Boston.com | Rideshare drivers in Massachusetts formally unionize by New York Times Service

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

Rideshare drivers for Uber and Lyft in Massachusetts have become the first formally certified unionized workforce in the United States, with the newly recognized App Drivers Union set to represent roughly 70,000 drivers and begin collective bargaining on issues such as pay, safety and deactivation. The certification follows a 2024 statewide ballot initiative that gave drivers the legal right to organize, and the union met the state’s threshold by securing designation from more than 25% of active drivers. Governor Maura Healey hailed the milestone as historic, while Uber and Lyft each pledged to work with the union in good faith. Backed by the Service Employees International Union, Local 32BJ, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the App Drivers Union’s success aligns with similar unionization efforts underway in California and Illinois.

Rideshare drivers in Massachusetts formally unionize

The App Drivers Union said it was the first organization in the country to be formally certified to represent drivers for apps such as Uber and Lyft.

Boston.com

"This effort stems from Massachusetts Question 3, a state ballot measure that voters approved in 2024. The law established a unique set of circumstances under which this new type of union could be created. That in turn led to a version of a card check that sounds more like a long, drawn-out grassroots signature-gathering process from the App Drivers Union over the past two years, according to the Boston Globe. Almost 23,000 out of the state’s 70,000 active drivers signed, and that legally qualifies this specific union as drivers’ “exclusive bargaining representative,” per the Globe.

"But rather than being overseen by the National Labor Relations Board, this union is overseen by a state body, the Department of Labor Relations.

"Recognition of the #union is typically a wrenching next step in this process, but #Lyft, for its part, gave a fairly supportive statement to the Globe, which says in part, “As this new process moves forward, we’re committed to engaging in good faith.”

Home - CBSNews.com | No driver's license, no problem: How Uber, DoorDash and Lyft accounts are being rented and stolen online for hundreds.

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

CBS News California Investigates found that Uber, Lyft and DoorDash accounts are being bought and rented online—often without any driver’s license or verification—allowing individuals who would fail the platforms’ background checks to operate rides‑hare and delivery services. Investigators traced listings on Facebook Marketplace and Instagram, spoke with longtime driver Sergio Avedian who confirmed the practice, and documented incidents where customers received deliveries from people who did not match the profile photos, including one who threatened a disabled customer with a firearm. The probe revealed sellers promising to bypass background checks, prompting criticism from Rep. Debbie Dingell and highlighting the limits of current safety measures; while Uber, Lyft and DoorDash say they prohibit account sharing and employ ID checks and background screenings, CBS LA’s test deliveries showed a notable mismatch rate, underscoring ongoing consumer‑safety concerns despite recent California legislation requiring driver identification.
