#OTD in 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted (or rather, exploded) most violently. I was nine years old and the tragedy of lost life escaped me. I just found it all absolutely fascinating. 42 years later, I was able to visit the place (albeit not long enough, of course) — and was just as fascinated by the recovering landscape.

From a hike I did with friends to the top of Mt. St. Helens (Loowit) in Aug. 2000. It’s an amazing journey I hope to do someday with my kiddo. I grew up in the shadow of this and other nearby volcanoes and was barely a toddler when she blew. It has absolutely shaped my love for geology and the natural world.

I summited My. St. Helens for the second time yesterday. The hike up and then back down was pretty intense, but there were great views this time around, and I had my first glissading experience!
