Longtails are by far the type of cargo bike that I see here the most. This one is quite in harmony with her all black wardrobe.

In the historic city centre of Montpellier is little space for sperate use of the roads, so share the road is a thing here. Pedestrians are the dominant mode of travel here but vehicular traffic with bikes and cars and small lorries exists. I could only assume what the conversation of the two was, but it happens after the cyclists rode by the lady with little distance. The conversation was held with respect and ended with smiles.

In a city with a rapidly grown cycling share conflicts in the combined use of public space are certain. Being able as a community to learn from each other would be a must have skill, that we might miss in Germany sometimes.

BTW: this situation I watched while having an amazingly good filter coffee at the cafe Coldrip.

Hiding what matters

A family on one bicycle is not just surrounded but hidden behind cars. These soulless machines carry humans too but they are not seen. This picture shows all the imbalance of power in hour public spaces. Cars in the foreground swallowing the family, in the background even more parked cars. Public space made by humans to accommodate metalboxes. Cars are dominant here in Kiel and Kiel is one of the better cities in Germany. They are seen everywhere, blocking views, causing noise and danger, a human scale mobility is given away for inefficient car traffic. We let children pay the price. They pay with given away freedom, forced dependency, sometimes we demand lifes to pay for unconditional car dominance.

I never planned the first picture with that family drowning in car traffic. When taking panning photos my complete attention goes to the process of focusing and following the moving object. I usually prepare for a combination of object and desired background but thinking of two cars fotobombing the foreground without hiding the main characters would be something I wouldn’t dare to wish for.
