Thoughts on the Viltrox 28mm pancake

I have spent some days with this most tiny lense now and it has become my everyday everywhere lens. It makes my rather large XT3 so small that it fits in my pockets. That alone is a fun quality.

But is it any good too? Yes. In someways it is bad but you can work with it’s flaws. The biggest flaw to me is the slow and unreliable autofocus. And that is a thing because auto is the only focus option. No manual focus on the small lens.
The closer an object is the better it focuses. But even with the close up detail shots it fails often. I fix that by taking my time to make sure the focus is right before I shoot and then double check afterwards. Or at least I try to, because it is a bit of a problem when shooting moving objects - cyclists in motion are challenging. The good news is that when the focus is spot on it is more then sharp enough for everything I would wish for.

Is it fun to use? It is fun. The limitations are bigger then with every other lens that I own and I feel that this relaxes my mind. No manual focus, no zoom and only one fix aperture of 4.5 means that there is not much that can be set.
Don’t even think of blurry bouquet, because - unless you go very close to the minimum focus distance - there is no such thing. And with the bright summer days panning for motion blur is no option either, because the fixed aperture of 4.5 means that you can adjust a little with the ISO and everything else needs to come from the shutter speeds. I leave the shutter speed on auto and accept that most pictures will be without any motion blur.
So being aware of the entire scenery and lighting is something I am now working on.

So far I am enjoying learning more about how I am taking better pictures with this lens than I regret missing some focus. And that makes it an valuable extension of my tool box and way more than just the cheap and small option that I was hoping to get.

Montpellier

He has built the bike himself. The frame is Italian he told me. We didn’t have much time and he told me about his shop where he would (also) sell bike parts.

I cannot say that I am not excited to meet this beautiful city and the beautiful people here. The city - on first impressions - has a good cycling network and it has an even better tram network. It is considered to be France‘s best tram network. I will not have enough time to discover all this first time.

I have no idea if this was the start of the day or still the return from last night. All I know is that the bicycle and outfit where perfectly in style.
At first I just took a snap shot when getting of the tram but then felt the need to get closer. Rather then overthinking I made the steps and asked for the picture.

I didn't get the shot perfectly right. The branding on the frame is a little blury and I wish I could identify the brand. I like the black and white paint job and the matching monochrome outfit.

Please give me a sign if you recognise yourself. I would love sharing the original and a print with you and I would like to ask, if you would be fine with unbluring your face.
