#ScotRail has launched a UK-first satellite-based Wi-Fi system on
#trains in the Scottish Highlands, improving connectivity for passengers. Six Class 158 trains, running from Inverness to Wick, Thurso, Kyle of
#Lochalsh, and
#Aberdeen, will trial the technology for six months. Developed with Clarus Networks, the system connects to a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, addressing long-standing connectivity issues. Supported by the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and the Scottish Futures Trust, the project offers benefits such as improved Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi calling, GPS tracking, and on-board CCTV access. If successful, the technology could be rolled out across the Class 158 fleet and influence future train procurements. The initiative aims to boost rural digital connectivity, supporting economic resilience and growth in remote areas, in line with the
#Scottish Government’s focus on improving digital services for rural communities.
