Boeing 737 Max Crisis: Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines Accidents Revive Concerns over Boeing's Reputation

The Boeing 737 Max crisis continues to make headlines as investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) unfold. After the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines accidents in 2018 and 2019, respectively, Boeing faced unprecedented challenges. Despite record orders and exceeding annual sales of 1,314 units in 2023, the optimism surrounding Boeing's new crisis has faded. The recent incident involving Alaska Airlines and a 737 Max plane losing part of its fuselage mid-flight further alarmed the industry. The FAA administrator commented, 'This incident should never have happened.' Boeing is not only dealing with regulatory issues but also addressing concerns from its clients regarding the aircraft's reputation. Emirates President Tim Clark made a striking statement after the recent Alaska Airlines incident: 'We don't have problems with control of temperature for a long time; this is just the tip of the iceberg.' Boeing executives have been under pressure to prioritize metrics related to profitability and convince employees, investors, and airlines to continue producing better aircraft. Under the current scheme, Boeing executives have pushed for numerous changes, some of which have been criticized as 'a big mistake' by analysts, such as Jeffrey Sonnenfeld from Yale School of Management. The situation with Spirit AeroSystems, a former Boeing subsidiary now under private equity ownership, has also come to light. During the earlier generation period, Boeing's Wichita division produced parts for iconic aircraft like the B-29 Superfortress, B-47 Stratojet, and B-52 Stratofortress 737. The division changed in 2005 when Boeing divested it and adopted its current name. The executives at Boeing had followed this move, but it led to problems. The financial statements of Spirit showed a critical situation during the pandemic, which prompted Boeing to intervene with financial aid. However, Boeing took longer to identify quality issues in some parts sent by Spirit. Spirit re-emerged as a self-manufacturer of the Boeing 737 Max 9's tail section for Alaska Airlines.

«The beginning of this report quoted Harry Stonecipher, the Chief Executive Officer of McDonnell Douglas who became the President and Chief Operating Officer of Boeing, who in 2004 told the Chicago Tribune: “When people say I changed the culture of Boeing, that was the intent, so it’s run like a business rather than a great engineering firm.”

...Boeing has gone from being a great engineering company to being a big business focused on financial success. Continuing on the same path it followed with the 737 MAX, where safety was sacrificed to production pressures, exposes the company to potentially repeating those mistakes...

Keith Leverkuhn, the former senior-most official on Boeing’s 737 MAX program ... appeared unable or unwilling to either take responsibility for any of the problems that occurred on the MAX program or to even acknowledge that any problems existed at all...

Indeed, producing a [regulatory] compliant aircraft that proved unsafe should have been an immediate wake-up call to both Boeing and the FAA that the current regulatory system that certified the MAX is broken. Unfortunately, serious questions remain as to whether Boeing and the FAA have fully and correctly learned the lessons from the MAX failures.»
