Martagon Lily (Lilium martagon, Türkenbund-Lilie) is a native, long-lived wildflower found in light woodlands, mountain meadows, and forest edges across Europe and parts of Asia. Its elegant, downward-facing flowers with recurved petals bloom from early to mid-summer and are especially attractive to butterflies, bumblebees, and hawk moths with long proboscises. These insects serve as key pollinators, drawn by the lily’s deep nectar stores.
Ecologically, the Martagon Lily contributes to biodiversity in semi-natural habitats and serves as an indicator of undisturbed or traditionally managed landscapes. Though not dominant, it enriches plant communities and offers seasonal foraging opportunities for specialized pollinators. As with many native lilies, its presence reflects balanced soil conditions and relatively low human disturbance. It is an endangered plant species and is a protected species. It grows at the edge of our meadow towards the forest. Not a fodder plant for cows though.
