I just discovered that there's actually a plugin to have an actually pretty interface on #Koreader!

Here's how it looks on my #Kobo Clara 2E! But it's super customizable and has a lot of modules and ways to arrange things, enjoy!

👩‍💻 My So Called Sudo Life: Jailbroken Kindle x Windows edition

I just used a Windows PC for the first time in 20 years possibly?

Long story short, I typically manage my Kindle 4's contents with a Macbook Air from 2013 that still works wonderfully.

But! The old Air stayed behind in Paris, as I just arrived at my parents' in Italy with my Macbook Air M4. And the Kindle would not mount on it, no matter what I tried (even checking USB connections in Terminal). Last resort: I asked my parents if I could use their PC.

Dad got upset because with the first micro USB cable the computer wouldn't recognize my Kindle... so he launched #copilotai looking for help and I literally screamed "Nooooo I don't want any of that, quit quit quit immediately."

A different cable did the trick, I installed an earlier version of KOreader and it seems to be better... but the books aren't rendering yet, they're all gibberish, so I may have to install Calibre on my parents' PC and re-convert all the books.

Why going through so many hassles? Did you ever see how gorgeous Simple UI is for KOreader? A total game changer.

Sorry for the GitHub link, but it's either this or Reddit or YouTube, so choosing the "lesser evil" (debatable, I know):

I'll share photos as soon as I get it to work... it already took me upwards of 6 hours to get KUAL and koreader to install on my ancient Kindle. Nobody is stopping me now, I'm super super motivated to get it to work 😅

So for my use case, I just don't see the point of #KOReader. I bought the kobo color because I wanted to ditch my Amazon Paper White. But I can use #Calibre to load ebooks directly onto the kobo. It's a much more polished experience compared to KOReader.

My Kindle (the original paperwhite) still sort of works, sometimes. But it kept locking up and having to be rebooted frequently and acting like it's a matter of time before it won't reboot at all.

So I stopped using it a few months ago and picked up a cheap epub-only reader to use until I decide whether or which 'good' ebook reader to buy--I only know I won't buy another Kindle.

Ironically my old Kindle Keyboard model still works fine--of course it hasn't been supported for a long long time but I can still sideload mobi formatted books onto it if I want.

Now that Amazon has declared my Paperwhite obsolete and useless for new books anyway, I think I might try the 'jailbreak and install KOReader' thing I've been hearing about.

If the locking up issue is a hardware problem and it gets bricked I haven't lost anything, but if it's just a software problem, that could fix it and make it more useful than before, and I'd have no need to buy a new device.

shipping v0.1.0 for bookwyrm.koplugin!

I've been working on this for a bit and I think it's in a good place for people to use, test, and give feedback. I jailbroke my kindle just to use this!

Using KOreader, view your bookwyrm bookshelves and checkout books that are already in your eReader library.

Also a shoutout to @bookwyrm

#amazon just emailed me to let me know that my Kindle 4 NT will no longer be supported and I should buy a new one. Thanks but https://koreader.rocks/ makes my old kindle awesome. #koreader and I won't buy anything made by amazon again any time soon.
KOReader

It's not that hard to free your kindle. :)
See: https://kindlemodding.org/
I recommend you try it if your kindle is supported by the jailbreaks.

I use #KOReader (https://koreader.rocks/) on my Kindle, and I like it far more than Kindle's native interface.
KOReader is also available on other platforms (e.g., Android, Linux) so you can try it there first!
It can even synchronise reading progress between devices, so I can resume reading on my tablet/phone. :)
(yes, I shill koreader. its awesome)
