I was recently in on the very beginning of a Thing That Blew Up On Social Media, and boy did it open my eyes.

I knew these kinds of online kerfuffles tended to have a life of their own, entirely separate from the events and personalities that started them off, but I'd never seen one go quite like this. Probably old news to people, but I'd just never been in one at such an early stage.

It grew to multiple camps of people, aggressively pushing various competing agendas, all of them trying to claim that the tiny snowball that got the whole avalanche thing going was Very Obviously Hard Evidence of Their Position, and pushing orthogonal side-issues and dirt into the fight.

Wow.

Huge #kerfuffle in #Kirkland! One candidate hassled an 84-year old woman who was fixing, not defacing or removing a sign, and a second candidate filed a police report on her.

#AmyWalen (running for WA state senate) has rightly called for removing all endorsements for the two candidates involved. Since most residents don't like these two candidates, this is one of those "manna from heaven" moments.

The #kerfuffle this week about #GM's practice of collecting #drivers' behavioural #data and then providing it to #data #brokers (causing some to have their insurance costs raised) brings up one of my pet #peeves.

#Journalists, can you please stop writing "<company> shares data with <data broker>"? They're not "#sharing" anything - they're #selling it.

"GM is selling drivers' behavioural data to LexisNexus" is a much more accurate statement. Why are you doing companies' PR for them?

When the starlings took the stage, chainsaws, ringtones and sheep sounded from the trees.

An exotic symphony enveloped the area until the magpies came and caused a #kerfuffle. They railed at the stars of the scene, who talked back to them ... in magpie.
