I was recently in on the very beginning of a Thing That Blew Up On Social Media, and boy did it open my eyes.

I knew these kinds of online kerfuffles tended to have a life of their own, entirely separate from the events and personalities that started them off, but I'd never seen one go quite like this. Probably old news to people, but I'd just never been in one at such an early stage.

It grew to multiple camps of people, aggressively pushing various competing agendas, all of them trying to claim that the tiny snowball that got the whole avalanche thing going was Very Obviously Hard Evidence of Their Position, and pushing orthogonal side-issues and dirt into the fight.

Wow.
