We are adopting an old hen dedicated for soup on Thursday. No, the chicken coop isn't finished.

Successful afternoon! The base for the chicken coop is up, the frame of the polytunnel is moved, and the eggs are showing life. Yes, those are wild flowers in the bed. Yes, that's old paint. No, it won't stay that way.

(PS: the asbestos bed edges are gone. You can breathe.)

Aaaaaaah! The eggs are alive! Aaaaaah! The lamp was not bright enough or the room too bright. Thirteen out of fourteen eggs are alive. Aaaaah!

I think the base of the chicken coop will be up today. And with that, the only part of this build that had me worried at all will be done. I don't worry about the actual coop build. I've got a plan in my head. Yes, I am building a coop by feel. It's working out just fine.

Either I don't know what I am doing or not a single one of the breeding eggs is fertilized. I can see darker areas in some but no veins, no beating hearts, no movement that isn't due to gravity.

I keep watching the eggs in the incubator. I logically know that absolutely nothing is happening at the moment. There's just absolutely normal looking chicken eggs, just like the ones in the fridge, but these are special. You can't see that these are fertilized eggs, that these will be baby chickens very soon.

Day 2 begins.

I'm picking up breeding eggs for our chickens tomorrow. I'm so excited. This wasn't the plan at all. We'd planned to get some hens and a cock. I guess we're getting chicks instead.

In our case, it's pretty clear: the egg came before the chicken.
