“I WANTED TO RUN, BUT THEY GAVE ME WINGS”
Maria Vernaldi (*1964–†2005) spent most of her life in a wheelchair. Raised in East Germany, she was a punk and found fulfilment as a painter.
Her brother Matthias Vernaldi, who was also disabled, was a well-known activist in the disability rights movement, campaigning for self-determined living, sexuality and the inclusion of disabled people.
Maria Vernaldi was part of a commune unique to the GDR, where people with and without disabilities lived together.
