Today I emailed my city councillor about getting like 30ft of bike path made so kids can ride their bikes to school without riding through a parking lot.

My best guess is that this is at minimum a two year mission.

This is great! This isn't some site in the middle of nowhere, there are amenities around as well as market rate housing across the street, great for social integration!

My only qualm is the Car-Centric planning of the wider neighbourhood, no retail to speak of and largely single use. Here's hoping Habitat for Humanity thinks of that; perhaps some units that can be converted in future to have retail at grade and dwelling above.

And now for some actually good news!

My city is transferring land to build more than a thousand "affordable" and "attainable" housing units. With a focus on 3 and 4 bedroom units.

It's a start, not a finish. But I'm happy we're starting.

Waterloo to transfer city-owned lands to build more than 1,000 affordable homes | CBC News

The City of Waterloo announced Thursday it will transfer city-owned lands to Habitat Waterloo Region to build more than 1,000 affordable homes. The city says it's "one of the largest and most ambitious affordable housing projects in Canada."

If you really need it to cover your own expenses, that's okay too. :)

Voted this morning! Yay for being dutifully-minded.

I'm kind of chuckling, because I was like, 'Okay, going to use Google Maps to find the place because I remember wandering around a bunch last time', and no, it's right behind McLaren. Just cut across the McLaren arena parking lot and take a quick hop down a slope and you're at the Calvary.

I swear, just call me Ryoga Hibeki or something.

Remember to get out there, my fellow Central Kitchenerites, if you've yet to do so!

There are now 14 registered candidates for the #Kitchener Centre provincial byelection, plus one who's declared but is as yet unregistered. There may be a few more registrations before Wednesday, when registrations close.

Candidates for smaller parties are declaring their candidacy and registering for the Kitchener Centre byelection. I expect there will be a small deluge just before nominations close on 16 November.

When talking about cities, and advocating for the kind of city I want to see, I frequently lean on some of the same resources.

To make my life easier, I've collected them into a blog post: https://ghost.preinheimer.com/resources-i-lean-on-when-talking-about-cities/

Maybe you'd find some of them interesting?

Resources I Lean on when talking about Cities

I've started caring more and more about livable cities, and what cities need to thrive. I've made this post mostly as a link farm to the sorts of resources I end up referring to often. Single family homes are expensive for cities This slide from the City of Kitchener shows

A thing I really miss on here that I got a lot of on the bird site is snarky political commentary on local, Toronto, and provincial issues and events. There's some of that on here, but there are a ton of people I miss. And I'm much less well-informed because of it.
