Mattarella inaugurates ‘Vitality of Italian Architecture 1946-2026’ at the MAXXI.

(Adnkronos) - President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella inaugurated today at the Maxxi the major exhibition ‘Vitality of Italian Architecture 1946-2026’, accompanied by the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli. A symbolically significant event, with which the National Museum of the 21st Century Arts celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Republic through one of the languages that most profoundly told its transformations, ambitions, and identity: architecture. The exhibition, set up in the KME Gallery and open to the public from May 29 to November 15, 2026, proposes a route that crosses eighty years of Italian history reinterpreted through buildings, projects, visions, and protagonists who contributed to building the country’s civic space. A journey that intertwines culture, society, economy, and politics, returning the vitality of a discipline that has accompanied the growth of the Italian democratic nation from the post-war reconstruction to contemporary challenges. “This exhibition highlights the vocation and founding mission of the Maxxi,” declared Maria Emanuela Bruni, President of the Foundation. “Alongside the art museum, here lives the first and only national architecture museum, created to value and archive the country’s heritage. Today we pay homage to an extraordinary season of creativity and civic commitment, valuing the contribution of architects, urban planners, scholars, and institutions that concretely shaped the principles of the Republic: openness, participation, progress, and the protection of the common good. The presence of President Mattarella gives this moment a particularly high significance.” For the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, the inauguration represents an opportunity to reflect on the role of architecture in the construction of the republican identity. “Celebrating the vitality of Italian architecture from 1946 to today means celebrating eighty years of the Republic’s history through one of its most profound cultural expressions,” he stated. “Architecture is the tool with which we have built and inhabited the spaces of life and community. It has been able to represent the political, social, and economic transformations, from reconstruction to contemporary challenges,” added the minister. The exhibition, curated by Pippo Ciorra and Elena Tinacci, collects works, documents, models, and materials from public and private archives, putting together different generations of designers. “It is an exhibition that embraces all generations of architects from the post-war era to today,” explained Lorenza Baroncelli, Director of Maxxi Architecture and Contemporary Design. “It places them in the legacy of the past, in the tension of the present and in confidence for the future.” “Vitality of Italian Architecture 1946-2026” thus presents itself as a great collective narrative, capable of returning the complexity and richness of a country that, through architecture, has imagined and built its spaces of democracy. An homage to the Republic and its history, but also a look open to the challenges that await Italy in the coming decades.
