Hey #digipres & #jhove specialists!

I can't understand why TIFF-hul-61 is an error (https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove/wiki#tiff-hul-61).

Value 6 for Compression is JPEG. But the TIFF 6.0 specification includes it as a valid compression scheme, doesn't it? Why and where would it be "deprecated"???

New #pdf examples have been published to https://github.com/openpreserve/format-corpus/tree/master/jhove-errors thanks to @bitsgalore #JHOVE For a couple of errors I have only one file because the other one is > 25 MB.

@BertrandCaron @anj @dsalo I’m getting back to my pile of #pdfs and hope to have some files that represent PDF-HUL errors to share on the #JHOVE wiki.

@mutanthumb @anj @dsalo

Sorry to jump in very late, but I think that, though all of @anj points are very valid - pdfcpu seems to be more consistent, and produce less false positives and less false negatives than JHOVE, the latter has a big advantage: its wiki. If we keep on documenting issues and remediation, that would be a serious advantage.

(And #JHOVE's maintainers are nicer than pdfcpu's 😜 .)

The result is not perfect - still some overlapping characters - but at least it can be read in Adobe Reader!

I will probably file a new issue for #JHOVE. I'm always wondering what benefit we get from a new test, but here it seems justified for two main reasons:

a) It has a severe impact on rendition,: viewers, esp. Adobe Reader, do not cope well with,
b) There is a possible remediation.

No, #JHOVE, that does not seem "well-formed and valid" to me.

Documenting false positives returned by #JHOVE is a silent task, but a useful one probably??

Hey #digipres people with knowledge on image data - is there a reason why #JHOVE reports RGB JPEG images as having a YCbCr color space, but CMYK JPEGs as being CMYK (and not YCCK)? Is it a consistency issue, or am I missing something?

Digital preservation at the coalface: or how I learned that glamping doesn’t always involve the vast wilderness

by @beet_keeper

The last Friday of March this year, I was invited by Elizabeth Kata at the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to give a presentation at the Vienna Institute for Historical Research (Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung). I don’t have a transcript for that day or a complete set of notes that I followed, but here is the essence of the talk. In it, Reflecting on community and self-development in digital preservation; I touch upon, among other things, community, recognizing privilege, and finding value and meaning in digital records.

I began and ended the talk by singing two Waiata, an important part of my previous role at Archives New Zealand.

Te Manaaki taonga

Te Manaaki taonga
E whakarauika ana I te tini e
E ranga ana I te tira
Hei huruhuru moo te manu ka rere
Hei Poutuumaaro mo te kainga
Tuituinga koorero tuituinga tangata
Manaaki taaonga manaaki tangata
(Tane chant: Tuituinga koorero tuituinga tangata.
Manaaki taaonga manaki tangata – Hi!)
(Last time Wahine join chant: manaaki tangata – Hi!)

The value/prestige in protecting treasures

They weave the party/masses
To be like feathers of a bird that takes flight
To be a strong pillar for our home
The sewing of stories, the sewing of people
The protection of treasures the protection of people
