Hey #digipres people with knowledge on image data - is there a reason why #JHOVE reports RGB JPEG images as having a YCbCr color space, but CMYK JPEGs as being CMYK (and not YCCK)? Is it a consistency issue, or am I missing something?

Digital preservation at the coalface: or how I learned that glamping doesn’t always involve the vast wilderness

by @beet_keeper

The last Friday of March this year, I was invited by Elizabeth Kata at the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to give a presentation at the Vienna Institute for Historical Research (Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung). I don’t have a transcript for that day or a complete set of notes that I followed, but here is the essence of the talk. In it, Reflecting on community and self-development in digital preservation; I touch upon, among other things, community, recognizing privilege, and finding value and meaning in digital records.

I began and ended the talk by singing two Waiata, an important part of my previous role at Archives New Zealand.

Te Manaaki taonga

Te Manaaki taonga
E whakarauika ana I te tini e
E ranga ana I te tira
Hei huruhuru moo te manu ka rere
Hei Poutuumaaro mo te kainga
Tuituinga koorero tuituinga tangata
Manaaki taaonga manaaki tangata
(Tane chant: Tuituinga koorero tuituinga tangata.
Manaaki taaonga manaki tangata – Hi!)
(Last time Wahine join chant: manaaki tangata – Hi!)

The value/prestige in protecting treasures
They gather/connect the people like the gathering of fish
They weave the party/masses
To be like feathers of a bird that takes flight
To be a strong pillar for our home
The sewing of stories, the sewing of people
The protection of treasures the protection of people

Question for the #digipres community, for #PDF validation why choose #pdfcpu over #JHOVE? I’m running pdfcpu I’m down to just over 1000 invalid files out of 175K files vs nearly 10K well formed but not valid files when running JHOVE.
When running #JHOVE json output had 151 files that produced no json output only this error https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove/issues/890 #digipres #digitalpreservation #OpenPreservationFoundation
Java Error on Jhove CLI by json formatter class java.lang.Double cannot be cast to class java.lang.String · Issue #890 · openpreserve/jhove

If I run the cli with the -h option, the json output runs on the following error message. SEVERE: class java.lang.Double cannot be cast to class java.lang.String (java.lang.Double and java.lang.Str...

Just finished the run and nearly 9K #pdfs were ‘Well formed, but not valid’ when using text output and with json there were only 3. @dpc_chat #JHOVE #digipres #digitalpreservation #OpenPreservationFoundation
When I run #JHOVE with text output I’m getting significantly more ‘Well-formed, but not valid’ #pdf files than when I run it with #json output. Has anyone else seen this? I’m running it on 175K files. #digipres #digitalpreservation
I’m using a lot of #bash #scripting and #python when using #JHOVE at scale to validate my large #pdf pile. It’s been fun! #digipres
Have @BertrandCaron’s slides been shared yet? #digipres #JHOVE

@tallison

Thank you Tim, that's so nice to hear!!

I'd love to do so!!! Right now it's just a small attempt, to see whether that could help prioritizing our work towards more common errors (and maybe improve #JHOVE's behaviour?) but I'd love to do it at a greater scale.

If I manage to do anything interesting in that direction, I'll certainly communicate at #iPRES next year!
