Archivists of Mastodon, I activate your batsignal! My father passed away recently, and the family’s archive of diaries and papers came to me. Among them are my grandmother’s handwritten diaries from 1937-1975, the earlier ones while her husband and brother-in-law were both serving in WWII. There’s a lot of historical value in these (at least in my biased viewpoint), but most of them are in tiny book format, and the WWII era one is already falling apart.

Do I digitize at risk of the paper media tearing/falling apart further? Do I not touch it anymore, even to read myself, and donate to the local university archives? Or is this just family ephemera that wouldn’t be valuable and it’s just up to me? I have several other bits like WWII newspapers, but the diaries and letters she kept are unique and detailed. Here’s the little 37-41 book, water glass for scale.
