Too many naps are risky for the elderly.

AGI - In elderly people, longer, more frequent daytime naps, especially in the morning, are associated with an increased risk of mortality. This was found by a study led by Chenlu Gao of Mass General Brigham, in collaboration with Rush University Medical Center, published in JAMA Network Open.

The study
The research, conducted on 1,338 elderly adults followed for up to 19 years, indicates that napping can represent an easily monitorable indicator of health status and underlying pathological conditions. The authors observed that each additional hour of daytime sleep was associated with an increase in mortality risk of about 13%, while each extra nap per day resulted in a 7% increase in risk. Furthermore, those who tend to sleep in the morning have a higher risk of 30% compared to those who rest in the afternoon.

“Excessive napping in old age has been linked to neurodegeneration, cardiovascular diseases, and greater morbidity, but many studies rely on self-reported data and do not consider parameters such as time and regularity – explains Gao – this work shows for the first time a relationship between objectively measured nap patterns and mortality, highlighting the clinical value of monitoring these habits.”

To fill gaps in knowledge, researchers used data from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a study launched in 1997.

How many naps
Starting in 2005, participants wore wrist devices to record daily activity and rest periods, allowing for the analysis of duration, frequency, time, and variability of naps. The analysis highlighted that, although 20-60% of elderly people take regular naps, excessive daytime sleepiness can reflect undiagnosed clinical conditions, sleep disorders, or alterations in the circadian rhythm.

“It is important to emphasize that this is a correlation and not a causal relationship: excessive napping is likely a sign of underlying diseases,” clarifies Gao. According to the authors, these results open the possibility of using wearable devices to monitor daytime sleep as a predictive tool, with the goal of identifying health conditions early on and prevent further decline.
