Happy International Heraldry Day to those who celebrate!

The date was chosen because on 10 June 1128 Geoffrey Plantagenet was presented with a blue shield displaying six gold lions by his father-in-law, King Henry I of England. This is the earliest known evidence of a coat of arms in colour on a shield.

Though as I am reminded from reading Dr Sheri Chriqui's thesis recently (which is a rare example of heraldry in academia) this is problematic for several reasons: textual evidence and effigy both postdate this event by decades, the effigy does not name Geoffrey, and this event doesn't establish inheritance.
