Echanove and Srivastava argue that urbanism should start with the people who shape cities every day, not just the officials who plan them from above.

You can’t plan humane cities if you never experience them at human scale.

People making transport policies often don’t know the reality of commuters. Cities need connected, accessible systems that reflect the lives of the majority: walking and biking, modern jeepneys, e-BRTs. Not more car lanes.

Move people, not cars: A shift to multimodal approach to mobility

IN hindsight, I begin to appreciate the value of being born poor. Poverty made me experience all the difficulties of life and toughened my character and resolve to aspire to make things better not only for myself but for others. The lessons and sufferings I experienced in those years of struggle served me well in identifying problems and offering solutions. Not that I advocate for people to remain poor. Rather, I am a firm believer in the value of immersion and learning by doing. What I do learn from poverty is the necessity of being immersed in real life to experience the problem so that a deeper and nuanced appreciation of the challenges can be achieved. This will certainly lead to a better solution. The ability to view an issue from within and without is a skill that leaders must have.
