International Conference on Information & Communication Technologies and Development in Nairobi, Kenya

In March 2024, we visited the ICT4D Conference in Accra, Ghana. A week later, Tobias, Jack, Noah and myself took up the chance and visited Margarete‘s high school from her previous project from 2012-2014. Back then she started to use mobile phones in education and supported teachers as well as students. We returned to conduct research about what was left of her initiatives, how did the high school evolve and how are mobile phones used today? We put up a team of researchers and published our results in form of a research paper and poster at this year’s ICTD conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The paper is titled A Decade Later – Revisiting the Untapped Potential of Mobile Learning with Smartphones in Ghana’s Higher Secondary Education. Below you find our poster and the research paper will soon be published in ACM’s Digital Library.

It was delightful to connect with like-minded researchers and activists. It was especially delightful to meet our friends from ICT4D.jp. Although I missed half of the conference as I was ill in bed, I had a fruitful exchange and recommend anyone to publish and attend the ICTD conference. Please consider going through the conference’s proceedings as many of the works of our colleagues is very much worth reading. The ICTD community is very welcoming and if you would like to participating in organizing the next conference, feel free to reach out.

Another wonderful experience was to meet up with good friends and members of ICT4D.at in Nairobi. Raphael, Anne and Jack are valuable members and we had a blast of a time. From dancing to African reggae music to visiting potential project partners such as KARIKA and doing a small trip to the Nairobi National Park where rhinos got in our way or visiting universities for networking. Nairobi was a wonderful experience and I could see why they call themselves the country of champions.
