there's so much to like about #sharkey, yet it also has various things that really irk & irritate me. one of the biggies is its infernal #MFM which if i had my druthers would die screaming in a fire. oh mighty zarquon how i wish i could just disable it forever & use proper #markdown instead

without doubt the biggest failure of MFM, amongst so many, is how preposterously frequently it is broken by commonplace punctuation... not only, but including,
#hyphens. eg, i frequently #italicise certain sentences or even paragraphs for emphasis or effect, but even just the humble hyphen breaks MFM, whereas it is fine in Markdown.

eg:
*this sample sentence would have rendered fine in MFM except for my insertion here of a gratuitously-inappropriate hyphen*

here it is again, sans-hyphen:

this sample sentence would have rendered fine in MFM except for my insertion here of a gratuitously inappropriate hyphen

gaaaaah i hate MFM

Non-life-threatening unselfconscious hyphens

Happy the reader who is unselfconscious about hyphens. Or is it unself-conscious? Un-selfconscious? When we add a prefix to a word that’s already (sometimes) hyphenated, it’s not always obvious whe…

This does not mean what they think it means, but on the plus side it could lead to some wildly amusing data.

_The Evening Post_, 18 Apr 1923:
SPARE THE HYPHEN
STRIKING STORY OF WASTE
It is said that enormous sums are lost every year through our habit of putting a hyphen in such words as “to-night,” “to-morrow,” and so on.
This startling statement is made by a number of mathematical experts who have been inquiring into the cost of #printing #hyphens, letters which are not sounded, and other useless symbols, says the Sydney “Sun.” Every year, they say, the French and British alone lose £8,000,000 through these practices.
The report states that in all the papers and magazines published in France 108,000,000,000 letters are used annually. Of these, 14,200,000,000 letters represent wasted labour. This causes printers’ ink to the value of £500,000 to be used without need in one country alone!
In English publications the waste costs £1,500,000 per annum. The space taken up by useless signs covers £1,000,000 worth of paper in France and £4,000,000 worth in England.
