Trade in food was strictly regulated in large parts of the Netherlands from the 17th Century on.
Strawberries and other soft fruit had to be packed and transported in special pots.
Usually a cup or bowl with a heavy foot and a hole in the bottom to prevent moisture to foul the fruit. Most market towns had their own measure for soft fruits and only licenced potters were allowed to produce these strawberry cups.
