In this episode we discuss some of the rulers rise and fall in bible history and how this impacts us today.

The pages of scripture are filled with bible history of mighty kings and powerful kingdoms.

From the grandeur of King Solomon’s reign to the downfall of mighty empires like Babylon and Assyrias, this bible history carries valuable lessons that resonate across the ages.

The rise and fall of biblical kings and kingdoms offer insights into human nature, the consequences of power, and the importance of virtue and wisdom we will delve into now…

    INTRO

**1. KINGS WHO ROSE TO POWER

Many biblical kings rose to power through divine appointments or divine intervention.

King David, a shepherd boy, was anointed by the prophet Samuel and later became one of the greatest kings of Israel.

Nebucanezzer, Saul, and king hezikah all had similar stories of rising to power with a sudden fall

Similarly, King Solomon succeeded his father David through divine selection.

King Solomon is renowned for his exceptional wisdom, which earned him a reputation as one of the wisest men in history. The Bible records the famous story of two women who brought a baby before him, each claiming to be the child’s mother. Solomon’s wise judgment to suggest cutting the baby in half to resolve the dispute, revealing the true mother’s love and compassion, became a symbol of his discernment.

One of King Solomon’s most significant accomplishments was the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. The temple became the central place of worship for the Israelites and a symbol of their religious devotion. Its construction was a testament to Solomon’s dedication to God and marked a pivotal moment in the history of ancient Israel.

Solomon is traditionally attributed as the author of three biblical books: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon (Song of Songs). Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and practical advice, Ecclesiastes explores the meaning of life and the pursuit of happiness, while the Song of Solomon is a poetic depiction of love and desire.

    1 Kings 4:32

He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005.

During King Solomon’s reign, the Kingdom of Israel experienced a period of unparalleled prosperity and trade relationships with distant lands. His strategic alliances and commercial ventures brought rare and valuable goods to his kingdom, contributing to its opulence and international reputation.

Other kings, however, ascended to the throne through ambition and human cunning.

King Ahab of Israel, for example, attained power through a marriage alliance but led his kingdom astray by embracing idolatry and disregarding divine guidance.

So we see a theme of how these kings came to their power. Some came to power through divine intervention, some hard work, and some by more evil ways.

**2. WHAT WERE THE KEYS TO THEIR LASTING RULE? *

The stories of King Solomon and King Hezekiah underscore the importance of virtue and wisdom in leadership.

Solomon, renowned for his wisdom, is best known for his fair judgment in the famous “Wisdom of Solomon” story. On the other hand, Hezekiah’s humility and devotion to God led to a remarkable period of prosperity and protection for the kingdom of Judah.

Both King Solomon and King Hezekiah were renowned for their wisdom and discernment. Solomon’s exceptional wisdom and insight helped him make wise decisions and resolve disputes fairly, gaining the admiration of his subjects. Similarly, Hezekiah’s faith in God and reliance on divine wisdom guided his decisions as a king, earning him the reputation of a just and righteous ruler.

Both kings recognized the importance of maintaining a strong spiritual foundation for their kingdoms. Solomon’s early commitment to God and dedication to building the First Temple helped solidify the religious identity of Israel. Hezekiah, on the other hand, initiated religious reforms by purging idolatry and encouraging proper worship of Yahweh, strengthening the spiritual resilience of Judah.

Both Solomon and Hezekiah undertook ambitious construction projects that showcased their commitment to strengthening their kingdoms. Solomon’s construction of the First Temple and his grand palace demonstrated the nation’s wealth and power. Hezekiah’s visionary engineering project, the Siloam Tunnel, secured Jerusalem’s water supply during a siege, highlighting his concern for the well-being of his people.

    4. Trade and Diplomacy: Both kings engaged in successful trade and diplomacy to enhance their kingdoms’ prosperity and stability. Solomon’s shrewd trade policies and diplomatic relationships brought wealth and valuable resources to Israel. Hezekiah formed alliances through marriage with neighboring kingdoms, ensuring political ties and security in the region.

Both Solomon and Hezekiah displayed unwavering faith and reliance on God. Solomon sought God’s guidance and wisdom, while Hezekiah’s trust in divine intervention during the Assyrian invasion led to the miraculous defeat of the enemy, preserving Jerusalem’s safety.

Both kings faced external threats to their kingdoms. Solomon maintained a strong and well-trained army, acting as a deterrent against potential invaders. Hezekiah’s faith-driven response to the Assyrian invasion demonstrated his trust in God, resulting in the miraculous victory and the preservation of Jerusalem.

We see here that both King Solomon and King Hezekiah were remarkable rulers in ancient Israel who displayed wisdom, faith, and leadership in different ways. Their accomplishments, reforms, and commitment to their respective kingdoms left a lasting legacy and continue to inspire individuals to this day.

**3. WHAT WERE THE CONSEQUENCES FOR THESE KINGS?

The rise and fall of biblical kings also serve as cautionary tales against hubris and disobedience. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon’s pride led to his downfall, as he was humbled by God and reduced to madness until he acknowledged God’s sovereignty.

King Saul’s disobedience and failure to follow God’s commands ultimately cost him his kingdom. His tragic demise serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of obeying divine guidance. King Saul’s downfall began with his disobedience to God’s specific instructions regarding the Amalekite people. God had commanded Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites and their livestock as a punishment for their previous actions against the Israelites. However, Saul spared the Amalekite king, Agag, and kept the best of the livestock, which led to God’s displeasure.

One of the key factors in Solomon’s fall was his departure from the exclusive worship of Yahweh, the God of Israel. Influenced by his many foreign wives, he allowed the worship of their gods, leading to the introduction of idolatry within the kingdom. Additionally, Solomon formed political alliances through marriages with foreign princesses, which further influenced him and compromised his devotion to God.

**4. HOW DID GOD INTERVENE WITH ALL THESE KINGS?

The stories of biblical kings and kingdoms reveal God’s sovereignty and His involvement in human affairs. Throughout history, God intervened in the rise and fall of empires to fulfill His divine plan. The fall of Babylon to the Persians and the eventual restoration of the Jewish exiles to Jerusalem exemplify God’s judgment and His commitment to His people.

Throughout the Bible, there are numerous instances of God’s intervention with the kings of various nations. Here are some notable examples:

    1. **King Saul**: God intervened in Saul’s life by choosing him as the first king of Israel. He also provided him with the Holy Spirit to empower him to rule effectively. However, after Saul’s disobedience, God withdrew His favor, leading to the rise of David as the next chosen king.

    2. **King David**: God’s intervention with David was evident throughout his life. God chose David, the youngest son of Jesse, to become the great king of Israel. God also helped David defeat Goliath, the Philistine giant, through his unwavering faith. Despite David’s moral failings, God continued to support him and promised that his lineage would have an everlasting kingdom.

    3. **King Solomon**: God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered to grant him any request. Solomon humbly asked for wisdom to govern his people justly, and God granted him unparalleled wisdom, making him renowned for his discernment. This divine wisdom enabled Solomon to make wise decisions during his reign.

    4. **King Hezekiah**: When King Hezekiah faced an invasion from the Assyrian king, Sennacherib, he sought God’s intervention through prayer. God answered his prayers and sent an angel to defeat the Assyrian army, sparing Jerusalem from destruction.

    6. **King Nebuchadnezzar**: In the book of Daniel, God intervened with King Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian ruler, by humbling him after his prideful behavior. Nebuchadnezzar experienced a period of madness until he acknowledged God’s sovereignty and power.

    8. **King Belshazzar**: In the book of Daniel, God intervened during King Belshazzar’s feast by writing a mysterious message on the wall, warning of the kingdom’s impending downfall, which came to pass that very night.

These examples illustrate how God’s intervention with the kings of the Bible shaped the course of history and impacted the destiny of nations. God’s guidance, blessings, and judgments played a significant role in the lives of these rulers and in the unfolding of biblical events.

**5 WHAT ARE SOME LESSONS WE CAN TAKE AWAY FROM THIS TODAY?

The rise and fall of biblical kings and kingdoms offer invaluable lessons for us today. Humility, wisdom, virtue, and obedience to divine principles are crucial attributes for leaders seeking to make a positive and lasting impact. We must remember that their actions have consequences, and their decisions can shape the fate of nations and communities.

In conclusion, the rise and fall of biblical kings and kingdoms present a rich glimpse of human history, offering profound lessons for humanity.
