Alla fine degli anni '80 durante una campagna di scavi sull'isola di Cipro, nel Mediterraneo, venne trovato un osso di gatto e successivi scavi portarono alla scoperta della tomba di un gatto sepolto insieme al suo umano nel villaggio neolitico di Shillourokambos, che era stato abitato tra 7500 e 7000 anni prima di Cristo. La scoperta è stata molto importante non solo perché è più antica di quasi mille anni rispetto alla prima testimonianza della presenza del gatto a Cipro, ma non lascia dubbi sull'esistenza di una forte associazione tra l'uomo e il gatto già a quell'epoca, almeno a livello simbolico. Il gatto sepolto con l'uomo aveva circa otto mesi e aveva quasi raggiunto la taglia adulta. La morfologia dello scheletro suggerisce che si trattava di un grosso felino, simile ai gatti selvatici che si trovano oggi nel Vicino Oriente. Le modifiche morfologiche dello scheletro associate all'addomesticamento non sono ancora visibili, il che giustifica l'uso del termine "domato", anziché "domestico".

In the late 1980s during an excavation campaign on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, a cat bone was found, and subsequent excavations led to the discovery of the grave of a cat buried together with its human in the Neolithic village of Shillourokambos, which had been inhabited between 7500 and 7000 years before Christ. The discovery was very important not only because it is almost a thousand years older than the earliest evidence of the cat's presence in Cyprus, but it leaves no doubt that there was a strong association between humans and the cat already at that time, at least on a symbolic level. The cat buried with the man was about eight months old and had almost reached adult size. The morphology of the skeleton suggests that it was a large feline, similar to the wild cats found in the Near East today. The morphological changes in the skeleton associated with domestication are not yet visible, which justifies the use of the term "tamed" rather than "domesticated."
