Hey everyone! Just a reminder that I'm giving a talk on the school to prison pipeline Wednesday night at the Cascade Parks library in Vancouver. It's hybrid, the Google meet link is on the webpage - I'd love for you to join me. #Teaching #Learning #HigherEdInPrison #Liberation #Justice

I went to the International Corrections Education Association conference on Monday and - for the first time - encountered my work in the wild! It was quite a feeling ♥

This started out as an interview w/me but ended up with me giving significant input on the broader topic of #CorrectionsEducation (although that work isn't credited). First time being cited in an article, so that's a #Milestone 🙂

Johnny Pippins didn't get out of #prison in time to start his #PhD last fall, but he says he's still hopeful for #clemency from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Read more about Pippins' story here: https://bit.ly/3V4Pvfj #highered #higheredinprison
Education often plays a big role in clemency decisions. Should it?

Johnny Pippins has already completed a master’s degree from prison. To pursue a Ph.D., he needs Illinois' governor to let him out early.

I talked to an incarcerated #student who wasn't allowed to enroll in #college one term because his cellie brought extra #food into their cell, which meant disciplinary hearings for both of them. Imagine if you couldn't go to class because your roommate took an extra snack from the dining hall? #prison #prisons #highered #higheredinprison
After being transferred to another #prison just a few classes short of his degree, one incarcerated #student I talked to was able to get into classes at his new facility. However, he wasn't sure if his credits had transferred back to his original #college and didn't know if he had graduated. He was released at the end of October. “I just hope that I was able to finish my #degree because starting my life over outside of prison…is going to be hard,” he said. #highered #higheredinprison
Thinking about #academic #freedom tonight. Not *that* kind of academic freedom, but the kind that gives you a kind of intellectual escape. From an incarcerated #student: "Taking classes gave me an opportunity to think about different topics that reminded me of my life before #prison." #higheredinprison #highered
