Whoop, the first row of the 20m front hedge is complete 🎉 Also the second row is at 13m, so another 7m to go, but need to celebrate the first row completion 🎉
So far I have planted 185 Hawthorn, 30 Field Maple, 20 Wild Cherry, 10 Spindle, 20 Crab Apple, 3 Beech, 1 Blackthorn, 1 Dog Rose and 1 English Oak.
Still have a load of trees left to finish off the 7m and fill in the odd initial gaps/damaged trees.

So the front hedge has got to 14.5m front row and 12m inside row. The front row is mainly hawthorn. I just finished the first batch of trees I ordered, this means the if I got what ordered the hedge contains so far ... 120 hawthorn, 30 field maple, 20 wild cherry, 10 spindle, 20 crab apple and 1 beech. Just got back in before the first rain of the predicted storm arrived.

The bare root trees have arrived to finish the hedge planting. So these will do the final 7.5m of the 20m with a few extras to add into gaps if the hares have taken any. Also the Beech will fill in another beech hedge.
So we have 60 Hawthorn, 20 Blackthorn, 20 Crab Apple, 20 Dog Rose, 20 English Oak (yes I want a couple of them as full trees above the hedge). Still a few Hawthorn, Spindle, Field Maple and Beech from the initial delivery.

I have done the 7m of the first row of the new hedge 50 bare root samplings planted. I will now do a random intermixed second row to give it some thickness.

Also have a separate beech hedge to extend along another side of the property.

Time for a coffee ☕

Have had a nice day and managed to get out and do more of the hedge planting. So the first line of hawthorn is now at 4m. I really hope that the roots take. The ground is so bad, with a gravel substrate that I have needed to pack the holes with fir wood chips (as I have no spare soil), the roots are also gel treated.

So day 3 of project #HedgePlanting I am working my day job so have just temporary "planted" the remaining trees in my raise beds in the poly tunnel and hopefully will be able to put in an hour after work
So final update of #HedgePlanting and drive project day two. I went back out and managed to cut the thick telegraph pole, so could flip the two pieces into place to line the driveway. Will line them with quartz rocks along the actual gravel line.
An update on the #HedgePlanting the first row of hawthorn is at 2m. Taken a break as wind has started to really blow making it a little harder. Plus need to still try and cut a telegraph pole so can move.

Day two of the #HedgePlanting project has started and the first six hawthorn are in the ground, one meter of the front row completed.

I am using rooting gel, and a fir mulch from a rotten tree that was professionally taken down for the solar project to keep the grass from competing too hard.

First row will be planted 20cm apart with added second row planted a little more randomly with a mix of species.

Photo shows the start of the process with the first two in the ground.
