Difficult decisions are going to have to made and there needs to be more of a national conversation I agree.

At the moment we’re framing it around holiday homes, caravans and in this recent case in #Happisburgh - graves of the dead:

These things are nice to preserve, but not vital. The risk will soon be to whole communities.

The fast-eroding cliffs at #Happisburgh, Norfolk exhibit splendid exposures of a "tripartite" (like neapolitan ice cream) Quaternary #geological succession - massive brown/grey #glacial till at the base, overlain by dark, laminated pro-glacial lake muds, then by glaciofluvial sands.
Two photos show infilled channels in the upper surface of the till, and one shows where the upper two units have been eroded back, exposing the upper surface of the half million year old Happisburgh Till Member.

Poor #Happisburgh is under imminent threat of going over the cliff into the North Sea. 10m so far this season. I'm no longer convinced, at all, by the 'natural processes' case, and think what we witness is actually a parsimonious refusal to invest in heavy-duty rock armour, a tragic passing of the buck between agencies, and outright neglect. See what is done in the outer isles of Scotland, to understand what is now feasible, develop a can-do attitude, & put #Breedon Aggregates on the case.
