Repairing an old window is - actually - surprisingly easy. We need some good tools and a great radio station listening to while doing the work. Anyone can do it.
And when we have learned how to do it, we are forever discovering how many ugly, dead new windows there are out there.

The last photo by me on Norwegian stave churches is a door from Gol stave church, the one moved from Gol to Oslo in 1884.

Those carpenters were quite good …

Sick, I know, but one of my favourite smells is tar. All Norwegian stav churches are coated in it, and it smells soooo good.

On my way home I drove past the largest of the 28 stave churches we have, Heddal from about 1200.
It is said to have been built from four tools.

1/3 The oldest of the windows that make up our recycled window wall have a lovely detail. The hinges are part of the iron corner supports.

As the hinges stick out it would have been easiest just to angle grind them off thus simplifying fitting them into the frame.

But in doing so the craftsmanship and the way that the hinges had been made would have been lost forever.

The hinges in the right hand window of the pair are now at the join of the two windows. So that this detail is visible to all who take the time to notice it.
