Text: In the synagogue, this passage is read as the Haftarah on the last day of Passover.

But the spiritual preparation begins now, in the month of Shevat (January/February). Itโ€™s the season of the "Shoot from the stump of Jesse"โ€”the awakening of new life from old roots.

Yesterday, listening to the #haftarah for beha'alotecha, I was struck by the part at the end: Zechariah doesn't recognize the menorah in the vision and asks the angel "what is this?", which made me think of the simple child at the #pesach seder. The angel responds by saying "not by might, not by power, but by My spirit, says God", and lots more stuff that is after the haftarah section -- but doesn't answer the question! Did Zechariah ever find out what the menorah was?

Israel's punishment in Jeremiah 46:28 refers to having served false gods. The false service is intersex mutilation, first under Pharaoh (female IGM) and then under Nebuchadnezzar (male IGM).

Today I learned that there were other #haftarah readings where we now have the special ones surrounding Tisha b'Av. I wondered about this during one of the haftarot of consolation this year, asked on Codidact, and tonight got an answer listing the original readings as listed by #Rambam. Neat!

Were there other haftarah readings before the Tisha b'Av readings were set?

After Tisha b'Av we have seven special haftarah readings, which always align with the same torah portions. Every chumash I've seen gives these special...

This week's Haftarah is straight fire. An absolute dynamite ending too.

Micah 6:6-6:8

"With what shall I approach GOD,
Do homage to God on high?
Shall I approach with burnt offerings,
With calves a year old?

Would GOD be pleased with thousands of rams,
With myriads of streams of oil?
Shall I give my first-born for my transgression,
The fruit of my body for my sins?

โ€œYou have been told, O mortal, what is good,
And what GOD requires of you:
Only to do justice
And to love goodness,
And to walk modestly with your God."

There is no such thing as "Haftorah."

The word "#Torah" comes from the word #teaching. A teacher is "Morah," and a parent is "Horeh." Parents are often the ones who teach us Torah.

#Haftarah comes from a completely different #Hebrew word. It means "additional," and is related to the word Maftir, the additional Torah reading.

To English ears, Haftarah and Torah sound similar. That leads to the common misspelling and mispronunciation, "Haftorah."

What's the difference between #Haftarah (S) and Haftarah (A)?
