Today I learned that the SS firing range and shooting club in St. Georgen an der Gusen (Upper Austria), built by prisoners of the Gusen concentration camp and opened in 1942 with Ernst Kaltenbrunner present, is still a firing range today.
It was used as a training facility for SS guard troops of Mauthausen and Gusen, then in 1945 ownership passed to the republic of Austria, but in the 1950s the shooting club won back the land in court.
Post-war history of Gusen was like that for a long time.
The main entrance of the prisoner camp of concentration camp Gusen was turned into residential house. They tried to make it look like a villa.
It was sold by the municipality of Langenstein to private owners and remodelled into a private residential house in the 1990s. The 1990s!!
And the Gusen memorial only exists because survivors brought up the money and bought that piece of land in the 1960s.
