Be it as #pork on rice, as #Guabao, as pork knuckle or in many other variations: pork is a staple #food in #Taiwan, with daily consumption averaging at 2300 metric tons. Which is... a lot.

So news about African Swine Fever being diagnosed at a pig farm in #Taichung were sending shockwaves through Taiwan. Forget about China's bomber drills, no pork on the shelves is the real horror scenario.

For now a first round of checks has not uncovered any additional cases. So fingers crossed! #foodsafety

Took three of my office mates to a Taiwanese restaurant in #Zurich for lunch today. And Simon Says Taste #Taiwan (at Zwinglistrasse, right next to Langstrasse) did not disappoint.
We had #Guabao for a starter (pricey but authentic) and various lunch sets.
I went for beef and water spinach in a Shacha sauce, which was delicious. Others had braised pork on rice and popcorn chicken, and the whole crew was enjoying the excellent #food. Highly recommended.

Yes, it was a long trip. But I arrived in #Taiwan spot on time and managed to get about six hours of sleep aboard Eva Air's 787. Now at #beer Geek MicroPub in #Taipei after some BBQ squid and a #guabao at Raohe nightmarket. Work starts tomorrow, day 0 of Taipei Cycle Show... #travel

Had a relaxed night out with some good #Taiwan-made craft beers at Learn Bar. Wolved down a bowl of beef and rice at Yoshinoya before going to bed.
Forgot to set an alarm - in a room without windows. Still woke up at 8:30am, got my fix of coffee and Dan bing for breakfast and checked out before 11am.
Now heading for the botanic garden and then for #Taipei's best #guabao. Plane for Europe leaves at 10:10pm, so off to the airport before 7pm. #travel

Luckily the old #Guabao vendor at #Taichung's Xiangshang #nightmarket is back, and he put some seriously chunky bits of pork meat into my two buns. Fingerlickin goodness! Maybe it was a #DoubleTenDay special? #food #Taiwan #travel

This weekend there is an #Asia|n #streetfood festival in the old part of our town of #Winterthur, #Switzerland.
Normally I'd be fully enthusiast about this. But sadly 90 % of the food stalls serve #Thai food. Nothing wrong with the food as such, but Asia has so much more to offer: India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and of course Taiwan, FFS!
No #Guabao for me then, so that's one unhappy bunny.

It's been almost on month since I've returned to Switzerland from #Taiwan. Apart from the weather, the thing that I miss most obviously is #guabao aka TW's hamburger with pork belly and some veggies in a steamed bun. #food

Good news for all who crave #Taiwan-style #food in #Zurich: Simon says is opening today, serving a proper selection of menus from #GuaBao to water spinach, from beef noodles to braised pork belly and scallion pancakes - and yes: popcorn chicken. Pretty sure I'll have to go and give it a try next time I'm in Zurich!
