Just learned about the whole #GrimWild #TTRPG Kickstarter situation yesterday. Disappointed, but at least we have the digital releases.

Just wrapped up session 11 of my Ultraviolet Grimwilds campaign! I feel like I have a better handle on the strengths and weaknesses of both UVG and Grimwild now, and while I can't fully endorse either without at least a few caveats, I'm still very much enjoying both!

Maybe I should even clean up my conversion document enough to be able to post it to my blog or Itch 🙂‍↕️

(They also work together very well, because UVG will frequently give you only the tiniest bit of information about anything, while Grimwild is built entirely around making sure that's never an issue)

On the one hand, letting players name NPCs is how you end up with NPCs with names like "Dumkis 'Kyle' Luigi Mario, esq III," but on the other hand, letting players name NPCs is how you end up with NPCs with names like "Dumkis 'Kyle' Luigi Mario, esq III."

#ttrpgs #GrimwildRPG #Grimwild

I don't know if I mentioned it but we put the #Grimwild game on hold. While I like a lot of things about it, in the end the basic action structure wasn't gelling with players, particularly in combat ("you aren't rolling to do a specific thing, you're rolling to achieve a goal"). Also it feels like a collaborative approach to consequences and world building is part of what makes the game work, and that part wasn't popular.

Not knocking Grimwild, we enjoyed it and I saved loads of prep time.

Danke!

I converted the crucibles from #Grimwild to markdown tables usable in #obsidian with the Dice Roller plugin. And here they are: https://daisychase.net/blog/2025/08/03/grimwild-crucibles-for-obsidian/
Grimwild crucibles for Obsidian

I converted I think all of the crucible tables in the fantastic game Grimwild to Markdown format for use with Obsidian and the Dice Roller plugin.

In my current #Grimwild game the party is being chased by warrior nuns from whom they stole a scroll case. The nuns have magic to let them track said scroll case.

The question is "why haven't they just found and beaten up the party yet" and I decided the answer was that the nuns behave like PCs. They ignore obvious hooks, refuse to talk to locals, get frustrated and start fights, and sometimes forget they can do stuff.

In-world this is justified by them being drunk most of the time too.

So I'm still not 100% convinced how much I enjoy running Forged in the Dark from a GMing perspective, but I've had two different one shots for two different groups foster fail into campaigns in the last few months, so that certainly says something about how they are as a player!

One of the rewarding things about running different #ttrpg systems is that you learn from each one and can usually use what you've learned in any other game.

For instance I'm running #Grimwild right now which I like a lot. But as and when I run something else I will have learned lessons about eg improv techniques, pacing devices, and minimum viable prep. What I have learned from GW is also flavoured by what I have learned from previous games.

#pnpde #Grimwild
