Graham Thorpe: Former England batter took his own life, family says

Former England and Surrey batter Graham Thorpe, who died last week aged 55, took his own life, his family said.

BBC Sport

Graham Thorpe was one of my first favourite cricketers whenever I first got into the sport in the early 2000s. He just seemed like the batsman that was always "just there" and would give England the runs they needed almost every time. Hardly ever heard a bad word about him.

I only just learned he's been "seriously ill" since 2022. I don't know what it means, but 55 is still too damn young. Valé, #grahamthorpe .

Damn. Only 55. He was a remarkable player. One of the few greats I saw playing live. I saw him score a hundred in a one day match for Surrey against Yorkshire at The Oval. Getting to 100 with a 4 from the last ball of the innings. Back when one day cricket was still played with red cricket balls.

His cover drive was a thing of beauty.

Graham Thorpe: Former England batter dies aged 55

Former England and Surrey batter Graham Thorpe dies aged 55, says the England and Wales Cricket Board.

BBC Sport

My very first Test match was England v Australia at Trent Bridge in 1993. The Ashes were already long gone and England were largely hopeless (Mark Lathwell opened and the bowling attack included Mark Ilott, Peter Such and Martin McCague. Not a golden era)... but I did see Graham Thorpe on debut making a magnificent second innings hundred.

RIP Thorpey. Gone too soon. This one stings.

Sad at the passing of #GrahamThorpe, though I was surprised when I first read the link as him being killed in action #KIA
