I had the honour and pleasure to deliver a keynote at this year’s ACM GoodIT conference in Bremen organized by Universität Bremen and the Sustainable Communication Networks (follow them on Mastodon!). In my talk, I focused on the intersection between researchers, NGOs and software engineers. My goal was to provoke with exaggerated statements while inviting my fellow researchers to bring their scientific results to reality. Research, especially for social good, should not stop with publishing the paper. Researchers might not be the people to implement their results, but they should still ensure to hand over their insights to people in the field. I shared my experience working as a senior software engineer at RISE and leading our NGO ICT4D.at, and how they could collaborate with such entities. I also sprinkled in two side topics I believe should always be considered while working in ICT4D. You can find my slides below licensed under BY-NC-SA 4.0, contact me if you also need the resource file. I was delighted to see that many attending researchers are already very much engaged and work on increasing their impact beyond their excellent research results. I highly recommend reading through the conference’s proceedings and get in contact with authors to start collaborations.
The GoodIT conference is very much worth attending as next to their diverse research papers united by the desire to do good, the community is very welcoming – this has been my first scientific conference where at the reception I was dancing until midnight. Delightful and joyful while being working on a better future: I highly recommend you to attend next year’s edition and hand in your work to GoodIT 2025 in Antwerp, Belgium 3-5 September 2025!
