Browsing in First Light Books yesterday, I picked up a volume of Rilke's poems. It fell open at this poem:

I think, although I'm not sure, that Rilke has enjoyed a longer and more widespread popularity in the USA than he has in Britain. I'm pretty sure I didn't hear his name mentioned in the seventies when I was a teenager in the UK.

Anyway, as I stood in the bookstore, the poem spoke to me with power of an enigmatic oracle.
