Peter Gabriel, So, 1986 on Geffen
One of the foundational albums of my youth – not just the “In Your Eyes” boombox scene from Say Anything, but really every track here. Sounds fantastic on vinyl. Definitely one of my desert island discs, provided I can bring a turntable.
In the UK this was issued on Charisma (PG5) and Virgin but in the US it was out on Geffen. It was reissued as a multi-CD / box set in 2012. On the basis of how great this album is I went back and learned the whole Peter Gabriel solo catalogue and even the early Genesis – on top of all the Womad / world music stuff he was also part of.
My copy, via the Worcester Record Riot, is an RCA Music Service club pressing from the RCA plant in Indianapolis.

Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks, Everybody’s Rockin’, 1983 on Geffen
Credited (as you can see on the cover and the labels) to Neil Young but also to Neil and the Shocking Pinks, this was Neil’s rockabilly album, with a band assembled just for this purpose.
I realize I’m something of a Neil Young completist, but I really enjoy this album, short as it is.
My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is a 1983 Carrollton pressing from the Columbia House Record Club (noted on the rear jacket).

Maria McKee, Maria McKee, 1989 on Geffen
This was the debut solo album from the lead singer of Lone Justice. She’s joined here by Richard Thompson and Marc Ribot on guitar and Steve Wickham on fiddle.
She’d go on to record six more solo records and some live recordings – but I don’t think any of them did very well in the US – she had more success in Europe.
My copy—via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN—is a 1989 Specialty Records pressing, with original inner liner.

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, 1988 on Geffen
This was an inescapable album in 1988 – not that I was trying to escape it. It was their studio debut and came out of nowhere to go 2x platinum.
You could argue they were one-hit wonders with “What I Am,” with its ear-worm chorus (“What I am is what I am / are you what your are or what?”) and what I guess is a pre-chorus “choke me in the shallow water / before I get too deep”). Technically true, in that the follow up singles did not break the top ten – but it’s really a great album.
(This was also just before the Indigo Girls also had a hit with “Closer to Fine” – I guess the late 80s was a good time to be aiming for simplicity and not overcomplicating one’s life philosophies).
Originally just New Bohemians – they’d foreground relatively new signer Edie Brickell when they signed to Geffen – they came out of Dallas and the scene in Deep Ellum. Brickell went on to a singer-songwriter career and multiple albums with Steve Martin (and the Deep Canyon Rangers). She also married Paul Simon in 1992.
My copy is a Record Service Alsdorf (Germany) pressing, in my collection via Lucky Records in Reykjavik Iceland. Happy to find one in great shape with the original inner liner.
