At the Nanaimo River estuary there is a modest conservation area that we visit occasionally. Just past the parking area there is a particularly marvelous Gary Oak (Quercus garryana) which even in winter silhouette has a majestic countenance. It spreads its gnarled tendrils up towards the sky and then twists back to earth in a felinesque stretch.
