@glyph We're getting close to building a table of tasks that 2020s AI is good for, and tasks it's not

Is the GenAI Revolution over already?

Just recently I saw the article (that probably most of us already noticed with a gentle smile), that AI coding tools can slow down seasoned developers by 19% (on InfoWorld). And just now I came to another article on Futurism, that “AI Use Is Now Declining at Large Companies”.

Heise.de picked up the article as well (Ernüchterung statt Euphorie: KI-Nutzung in den USA geht zurück) and outlines […]

The truth about (Gen)AI

(✅ clickbait title)
Recently I attended a GenAI event organized by <big company>. All professional, interesting, insightful. Really good. (Really! I mean it! No sarcasm.)

Until it hit me like a blow during a discussion:

I DO KNOW the whole plot already!

The discussions, the argumentation, the problems, the hopes, the promises of the consulting companies. Startups that make good (ok or bad) products and raise the hopes of the rest of the industry.

We’ve seen it all before with big data and data science – EVERYTHING!

<Technology> is a game changer.<Technology> brings x millions.If you don't do <Technology>, you won't survive in the market.<Technology> brings billions of €€€€.You need a <Technology> competence center, and a <Technology> strategy!

And the problems are the same – not similar, but the same!
When I look at the LinkedIn stream, I really have Groundhog Day.

We really are chasing the Gartner hype cycle. 🙈

Am I against (Gen)AI? Quite clearly: No
But the hype, the exaggerated expectations … do we REALLY need to do this, AGAIN?
Yes, apparently that’s just how we humans / companies tick.

Well .. then: let’s go into the valley of tears as quickly as possible, burn as little money as possible there pointlessly and off to meaningful use.

It’s sad, but there doesn’t seem a way around.

@nixCraft SO happy to see that for once, Apple suffers at the Peak of Inflated Expectations rather than just scraping of everyone else's accomplishments, ideas and laid-off workers in the Trough of Disillusionment and making big bucks on the Plateau of Productivity

The Gartner Hype Cycle on the Gartner Hype Cycle:

X (formerly Twitter)

@juergen_hubert @ShaulaEvans …absurd extremes. Such horrible, initial user experiences 🤯

Anecdotes by testers: Spent more time reviewing output, retrying prompts, etc. than if they'd have done the tasks unassisted.

Maybe such results indicate techies' silent, ground-level revenge against C-suites & boards pushing #GenAI? Those seem to mostly #FOMO the #GartnerHypeCycle like headless chickens.

PSA for #journalists, #bloggers & other #writers: You do not have to write about #artificialintelligence.

The #media hype around #AI is off the charts now, as history repeats the #GartnerHypeCycle of the Next Big Thing.

If you must cover AI, just know that most of what you write will turn out to be wrong, and I won't be reading your story anyway (and so won't a whole lot of other people). Beyond the snark, I offer actual reasoning and advice in the Writer's Guide:
