A little something from the book I'm working on:
She stepped off the Pathways at a right angle to reality. No one was around to see he just be there one moment after not being there just before. She preferred not to have an audience when she was Walking.
Looking up at the burned out building before her, she took in everything it could tell her. The fire brigade hadn't left much standing, which told her the fire was persistent. The air tasted wrong. And there was an even more subtle wrongness to the scene. Something was actively hiding crucial information.
Her dragon senses were keen, but if this was a hunt, she wanted her superior Gulo senses on the trail. Leaping up to a large hole in the side of the building, her white-furred dragon form melted away into a husky white wolverine-like shape. She didn't land on the floor, leaving herself floating a few millimeters off the incinerated debris.
She closed her eyes. Her grandfather and his brother had trained her to not rely on visual cues. Instead, she inhaled deeply, listened clearly, and even tasted the air. Something was off. Her brother's work had a certain signature. It had a specific smell, sound, and even taste. All of that was wrong here. To be certain, his signature was present, but it was altered. Someone has modified his equipment.
Now that she knew it was sabotage, it was just a matter of tracking down the right scent, the right taste, until she had it bleeding in her teeth.
She sniffed around a large machine that occupied most of one end of the room. It was surrounded by what seemed to be a large pool. She didn't recognize the configuration, but it felt like Cas's work. She wasn't an engineer, unlike her brother, but she knew his tech when she saw it. It always felt like him.
The air around the machine smelled like volatiles. She tasted the unmistakable tang of nitrate ester, and then there was the obvious smell of almonds. All of it was out of place for a backwater world like this one, which shouldn't have had much contact with Earth. So why was there Semtex?
She frowned, though it came across more like resting bitch face it was so practiced. Someone had tried to assassinate her brother. She logged all her observations with SERRA and stepped between to the hospital where he was being treated.
