OH MY GOD THE FACIEST OF PALMS. I'm grading intro #statistics exams. We took two runs at this: the first time through, 4-5 students didn't finish. A few others said it was hard to make it through the items. I felt like maybe I had pitched the exam too hard, so I sent out a quick announcement, canceled whatever other content was scheduled for the next class period, and told students we'd retake more or less the same exam (a few "random sets" questions from the computer but otherwise the same), with 30 extra minutes of time. Grade = higher of the two attempts.

FIVE students (out of over 20) showed up. Those five did quite well on the retake.

I'm seeing multiple students who didn't finish the first time, therefore got zero for several questions, and overall didn't do amazing on the rest of the exam... who didn't bother to show up for the retake. It was nearly the same exam. They had a practice run at it. They had two more days to study. They had nothing else going on because they had class anyway. about 80% of students didn't even show up, and now most of them are getting shitty grades.

Sometimes I feel it's OK to turn off the grade-related sympathy.

No seriously, how do we know its going to stop going up? We *think* it will as the days get shorter (in the northern hemisphere), but do we know for sure?
