Existing stakeholders may find that scary, but it will help the energy transition in the long-run.

Tools like PyPSA-SPICE and others can help lower the barrier to running these tools.

Multi-Day Storage is often overlooked in energy models—but excluding it hides its true value. Our new study with Form Energy shows how iron-air batteries can lower costs, cut curtailment, and support Germany’s 2035 grid during “Dunkelflaute”.

Open-source, reproducible via PyPSA-Eur/Earth.

The Role of Energy Storage in Germany

"The Role of Energy Storage in Germany" focuses on investigating multi-day storage solutions, specifically 100h Iron-Air batteries and their system benefits in Germany 2035. Low-cost Multi-Day Storage (MDS) has great potential to reduce curtailment, flatten electricity prices and reduce resource dependency while helping to meet emissions targets. Its benefits support delays in transmission projects and a mandated phase-out of gas power plants, especially during multi-day dark doldrums. It offers a particularly strong case in extreme weather year scenarios with optimized installed Iron-Air battery capacities of up to 31 GW in Germany. The project GitHub repository includes a fully open and reproducible workflow and comprehensive documentation.

🌍 PowerNetZero.org is live — a prototype platform modeling net-zero power systems in 9 countries using open-source #PyPSA-Earth.

We show what infrastructure is needed, how much it costs, and where to invest for max impact.

🚧 It is an early prototype. We need funding to scale, improve, and add countries. Know a funder? Let’s talk!

Policy Brief: Free the Models | Open Energy Transition

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟! Free the Models: How Open Energy System Modeling Unlocks the Energy Transition. To meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, we must accelerate the global energy transition. But achieving this requires more than ambition. It demands collaboration, innovation, and decision-making with courage. That is why Open Energy Transition has authored a policy brief addressing the need for open-source energy modeling. While traditional models have served us well, the future calls for open solutions that foster transparency, drive innovation, and support a more effective, efficient, and equitable energy transition. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧-𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞? 📌Improves transparency and reproducibility. 📌Enables quicker model results and more adaptability to user needs. 📌Encourages collaboration across sectors and borders to provide decision-makers with the highest quality insight. We recognize the complexity of climate transition decisions with interactions between energy carriers, global uncertainties, and potential unintended consequences. Our brief offers insights for energy planners and decision-makers navigating these challenges. Let’s shape a future where sustainable growth and climate action go hand in hand💡🌱 ⬇️ Read the full policy brief and join the conversation about the future of energy! #Zenodo upload for citations: https://lnkd.in/g5EjVdUg #FreetheModels #EnergyTransition #OpenSource #ClimateAction #Sustainability #PolicyBrief #RenewableEnergy

This Thursday 2/27 we're hosting a chat with a couple of the lead developers of the #OpenSource PyPSA-USA #electricity system model, which consumes our open data products. Feels weird reposting this with everything that's going on, but...

We are compiling an emissions & energy scenario ensemble that will hopefully be useful to IPCC AR7. We make an effort to make this more inclusive and transparent. Submission deadline March 1.

Working with #NUTS administrative EU 🇪🇺 regions is one of the little nuisances in #energysystems modelling and scenario analysis.

So the #IIASA #ScenarioServices team put together a little #opensource #python utility package so that modelers can focus on #freethemodels and don’t have to spend too much time on data-wrangling…
